The Fremont County Barn Quilt Trail in Iowa’s most southwestern county began as a project idea of Percival Hometown Pride members in 2018. The goal was to enhance the beauty of the county and to encourage tourism throughout Fremont County. Several barn quilt workshops were conducted with participants from the age of 9 to 90! They reached out to workshop participants and other Hometown Pride groups in order to make this a countywide project. Then a Fremont County Barn Quilt Trail Committee was formed including Hometown Pride members and others throughout the county. Our committee worked to establish criteria, discuss signage, the creation of a mobile- friendly website, and more for the trail. The 2019 Missouri River flood and then the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021 delayed our work. Despite those delays, we are now happy to welcome tourists to our barn quilt trail beginning in July 2023. While some of the barn quilts are actually hung on barns, many of our barn quilts are community quilts hung on buildings or displayed in landscaping since there are not as many old barns in existence today. Enjoy your time in Fremont County, Iowa while viewing colorful works of art in the form of barn quilts!
